2012 Mid-Year Conference – Cleveland
Held from July 29-31 at the Ritz-Carlton Cleveland, this was the premiere summertime event for everyone in campus-based loan administration and student financial services.
Rohit Chopra, Student Loan Ombudsman at the CFPB, provided the luncheon address and gave an update on the activities of the Bureau, including its forthcoming report on private student loans mandated by the Dodd-Frank Act. Gail McLarnon of the US Department of Education discussed the recently approved Perkins Loan regulations, plans for additional negotiated rulemaking on fraud, debit cards, and streamlining regulations in the campus-based aid programs, in addition to other current activities in the Department. In addition to these updates from Washington (along with insights from COHEAO Executive Director Harrison Wadsworth), the 2012 COHEAO Mid-Year also offered presentations and discussions on topics relating to day-to-day operations. Additional topics that were covered at the COHEAO Mid-Year include:
- The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s work in student loans and student consumer finance
- E-commerce practices with a focus on global consent forms
- Developing financial literacy programs on campus
- Fraud issues in financial aid
- An update on Meteor from the National Student Clearinghouse
