On Tuesday, February 6, 2018, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee held a hearing entitled, “Reauthorizing the Higher Education Act: Improving College Affordability.” This is expected to be the final hearing on HEA the committee plans, for now. While there was no mention of Perkins Loans in particular, committee Democrats several times pushed back on statements made by Republicans that increases in federal student aid encourages raises in tuition (the Bennett hypothesis.)

Stay tuned for an important update later this week from COHEAO on our grassroots and advocacy efforts and what you and members of your institution or organization can continue to do in the fight to save Perkins! Please email Greg Marak (gmarak@bosewashingtonpartners.com) or Jared Solomon (jsolomon@bosewashingtonpartners.com) with any questions.

  • A full recording of the hearing is available online.
