There are two initiatives underway in Congress to show support for the Perkins Loan Program. We really could use your help in a final push before Congress takes its usual August recess and leaves Washington.

First, we continue to see growing support for H.Res.294, sponsored by Congressman Luke Messer (R-IN) and Congressman Mark Pocan (D-WI), the House of Representatives resolution calling for the Congress to reauthorize the Perkins Loan Program. As of today, there are 36 cosponsors. We need to continue our outreach efforts and we urge you to contact your representatives, where you live and where you work (remember, they’ll be in your district during August recess!) We also encourage you to ask your colleagues and clients to do the same.

Second, immediate action is needed in support of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter’s (D-NY) Dear Colleague letter, which she is asking other Members of Congress to sign. The letter to the leaders of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce supports the reauthorization of the Perkins Loan Program. It now has 72 cosigners. But the closing date for the letter is Monday, July 27th so please complete your outreach efforts. Please share the Slaughter letter with your member of Congress and ask that they sign the letter in support of the Perkins Loan Program.

For your convenience, we have included an Excel spreadsheet which shows the H.Res.294 cosponsors, the Slaughter letter cosigners and those who have been contacted and have not responded. We have also included a copy of the Slaughter letter for those who may have not seen this yet.

If you have questions or information, please contact the COHEAO office.
